Onga crowns Nigeria’s Next Top Chef

Onga, living up to its promise of being a “helping hand”, realised the dreams of some lucky students who participated in the 2021 “ONGAlicious Next Top Chef” competition. The competition, which is in its fourth year, is one of numerous consumer engagement activities run by the brand. It is focused on identifying the most promising chefs across higher institutions in Nigeria with the aim of supporting the dreams of future ‘foodpreneurs’.

The 2021 competition was scaled-up from previous years, where Onga partnered with Nigeria’s foremost culinary school – Reddish Chronicles. There, the top 10 finalists attended a fully sponsored culinary course and enjoyed an all-expenses paid one week trip to Lagos.  The top 10 finalists were chosen from 30 universities pan-Nigeria via a cooking competition that tested their culinary skills.

In Lagos, the finalists were treated to the best of experiences: a visit to the Promasidor Head Office to meet the CEO and tour the Onga factory, cinema, beach, shopping experiences and more, while also being taught the business of food: how to make cocktails, pastries, and continental dishes among others at Reddish Chronicles. This was capped-off with a final cooking competition on 22 August to commemorate World Jollof day.

The final cooking competition task, of making Jollof rice and cocktails in 45 minutes, saw the emergence of Bibian from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka as the overall winner of a N500,000 cash grand prize, Joan Azonobor from Ambrose Alli University in second and Rita Okon in third winning N300,000 and N200,000 respectively.

In Bibian’s words: “I love you is an understatement. You have really impacted my life and I'm so grateful to you. Onga has helped me boost my kitchen, which I established in 2019 after winning the 2019 Campus ONGAlicious Next Top Chef where I won a big prize”.
